Elandskraal Bazaar to continue its iconic history this Saturday

The bazaar opens at noon and guests can look forward to traditional German hospitality and farm-fresh meat, complemented by a German Brass Band.

The Elandskraal Bazaar, which takes place on Saturday, is one of the most iconic social events on the Dundee calendar.

Started in 1923 as a fundraiser to complete the church building, the bazaar, held traditionally on the first Saturday in June in the scenic Elandskraal Valley, attracts hundreds of visitors. Many of these ‘pilgrims’ visit the valley from far and wide, with locals often travelling some 50km from Dundee.

Congregants from the Elandskraal Lutheran Church have been hard at work over the past few months, in preparation for the big day. The bazaar opens at noon and guests can look forward to traditional German fare, a welcoming German beer and farm-fresh meat. A German Brass Band will strike up some tunes to complement the atmosphere.

The meat stalls – which open at 2pm – are always a major attraction due to the quality of the goods. The kids’ corner will keep the younger ones entertained while parents mingle with friends. As the sun sets, guests can warm up with spicy gluhwein alongside roaring braai fires. Many choose to stay over or camp at Elandskraal, before leaving home the next morning.

For those who have not attended the Elandskraal Bazaar before, travel along the Greytown Road towards Tugela Ferry. A few kilometres past the Helpmekaar Police Station, turn left at the Elandskraal and travel for some 14km, to reach the church and the bazaar.
