Victim opens fire on bank card thieves

Realising his card was gone, the victim drew his firearm and shot at the fleeing scammers.

After his bank card was stolen, a man opened fire at a group of scammers.

The incident occurred near the ATM booth at ABSA in central Dundee at around 10.30am, say members of a local security group.

The victim, who was not identified, was reportedly withdrawing money from the ATM, when he was approached by a group of men.

They distracted the victim and made off with his bank card.

It is not yet clear if the gang managed to withdraw money from the victim’s bank account.

Realising his bank card was stolen, the victim drew his firearm and fired two shots at the men, who escaped in a waiting vehicle. Witnesses said that no one had been injured.

Members of the 911 Emergency Group have warned those using ATMs to exercise ‘extreme caution’ when using these machines which have become the favourite hunting ground for scammers.

Witnesses said no one was injured and SAPS has been alerted.

Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
