Spreading awareness among teenagers about a host of sexual issues

Community taught about a host of problems faced by the LGBTQ community as well

Members of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) youth advisory panel from Ladysmith hosted a function at Bhekuzulu Hall in Estcourt on Wednesday, May 15, to educate young people about teenage pregnancy.

The function was attended by 150 young people from all over the region, including a local school with a higher than normal teenage pregnancy rate.

Members of the youth advisory panel hosted lively and engaging conversations that touched on many of the sexual and reproductive health challenges young people face, including those of the LGBTQ community.

One of the points raised was that young girls become pregnant because they fear obtaining contraceptives at clinics due to being mistreated and judged by the service providers for engaging in sexual relations at a young age.

The function was attended by provincial government representatives and local leadership, including ward councillor Mr Ernest Ndumo, and was a huge success. The message of tolerance, understanding and sexual education was well received.
