Police officer shot dead during alleged hijacking

The police officer was dragged out of his vehicle and left at the roadside in a pool of blood

A 35-year-old police officer from Estcourt was killed in an alleged hijacking incident on Saturday (May 11).

It is believed that the officer was travelling in Alexandra Street in the Estcourt CBD at around 7.30pm when unknown gunmen opened fire on him.

The police officer was dragged out of his vehicle, a VW Polo, and left on the ground at the roadside.

The attackers fled the scene in the VW Polo, in the direction of Weenen.

With the aid of a tracking device, police traced the vehicle to a smallholding near Weenen.

Later the same day, police swooped on the area but were met with heavy gunfire and had to withdraw.

The following day (Sunday, May 12), police officers found the vehicle abandoned in the Nhlawe Ngodini area.

Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo says that no arrests have been made at this stage.

The officer who was killed worked as a constable at the Estcourt Stock Theft Unit.
