Big Boy Chicken takes the needy under its wing

"This is my way of thanking the community and showing Dundonians we are nothing without each other."

Big Boy Chicken is giving wings to those in need.

Clive Javu, owner of the company, said his team decided to give 10 chickens to three needy families in the Craigside area recently, in hope that it would instill confidence in them.

“As a businessman, I am here to lend a helping hand in times of need

Clive, who left the nursing profession after 16 years with Dundee Hospital, to pursue his dream of becoming a poulterer, contacted the Department of Social Development (DSD) before making the donations.

DSD then identified three families he could give chickens to.

The Sithole, Mkhwanazi and Zwane families have little to get by on, says DSD’s Simpiwe Zwane, who specifically mentioned Grace Sithole, raising five grandchildren single-handedly.

Venta Zwane, another of the chicken recipients, could not hold her tears back.

“May God bless you, you don’t know what you have done for me and my grandchildren. This truly means a lot to us. Thank you, Big Boy Chicken.”

On his donation, Clive says: “This is my way of thanking the community and showing Dundonians we are nothing without each other.”

Big Boy Chicken was established in March and within its first two months, has grown from 100 chicks to around 700, thanks to the support of the community.

“We want to grow our town and people need to support local businesses because we are all co-dependent on each other, and by so doing we can grow our local businesses.”

The Sithole family was delighted to receive chickens from Clive of Big Boy Chicken.

Venta Zwane, who lives with her two grandchildren, also received chickens.
