Cash-strapped Estcourt municipality accepts fleet of new vehicles

Spanking new fleet sparked speculation last Friday

A month ago a fleet of vehicles was delivered to Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.

This past Friday, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) officially handed the vehicles over in the municipal parking lot.

The fleet is made up of yellow plant equipment, refuse removal trucks and vans. Speculation was rife as to how the cash-strapped municipality can afford to ‘hire’ the fleet.

Residents questioned why municipal management would buy/hire vehicles when there are far more pressing service delivery challenges that could be attended to.

Some locals expressed that the new municipal fleet was merely ‘window dressing’ ahead of the elections.

A Facebook post by KZN COGTA read: “…The department continues with efforts to empower and strengthen capacity within municipalities. Two months ago the department launched the Good Green Deeds Campaign, which includes the procurement of plant equipment that will be borrowed to municipalities at no extra cost.”

One local passing the parking lot while the new fleet was parked there was heard saying:“The municipality has received new vehicles; they will end up like the previous ones.”

The Estcourt News enquired from the local municipality about the contract or terms for the new fleet, however, no response was received.
