The IEC’s National Operation Centre has officially opened

In a statement sent to the Courier, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced that the National Results Operation Centre, for the May 8 National and Provincial, Elections, has officially been opened.
“Commonly known as the “ROC”, the center brings together all key stakeholders in the elections under one roof to oversee the collation and finalization of the election results and has been a feature of South Africa’s elections for the past 20 years,” the statement said.
The centre houses members of the Commission along with key operational areas of the Electoral Commission, representatives of the 48 political parties contesting the national elections, domestic and international observer missions, and members of the media.
The national centre is complemented by nine provincial Results Operation Centres from where the provincial election results will be monitored.

“Over 700 journalists have applied for accreditation for the national ROC with a further 700 accredited for the provincial ROCs.
The centre will also house the SABC radio and television news operations for elections along with ENCA and newcomer Newsroom Africa.
The national center covers more than 12 000 m2 of space with over 450 computers, 20km of cabling and three giant screens which will project the results for the national and each provincial election as they are captured.”

The national and provincial ROCs will remain open until the official announcement of the results of the elections, scheduled for Saturday May 11  2019 at the national ROC.
