Outrage mounts over ”hooligan driver” who invaded school hockey game

'It is unacceptable that a hooligan can target school children like this'

Outrage is growing over a driver who drove onto the hockey field at Sarel Cilliers High School on Saturday and performed ‘doughnuts” while a girls hockey match was in progress.

Parents from Sarel Cilliees and Pionier High School in Vryheid, who were there to support the players, described how the girls and those watching ran for cover as the grey/silver Toyota careered onto the field.

“One guy was hanging out of the car holding a beer bottle of some sort. They did not care if they injured someone. It was a big joke for them,” said one parent who preferred not to be named.

The car was said to be carrying several passengers.  After performing the doughnuts, the driver sped off and was chased by another vehicle to Sithembile where the driver managed to evade his followers.

Kevin  van Staden, Sarel Cilliers principal, expressed his outrage over the incident.

“It is totally disgusting that someone can target a school like this and endanger the lives of pupils who are playing sport. We did not have security at the gate as the sports meeting with Pionier was not a big event and we have not had problems in the past.

“Why anyone would choose to do this is mind boggling. We have followed up with the Glencoe SAPS and we hope to soon trace the owner of the vehicle and the driver and take the necessary steps.”

He expressed his gratitude that no one was injured in the incident. One parent said his daughter was traumatised and had trouble sleeping since Saturday.  Anyone able to assist the police with their investigation is asked to call Sarel Cilliers or the Glencoe SAPS.
