Blocked storm water drains enrage Lindelani residents

With climate change and the rise of unpredictable weather conditions, the community of Lindelani is afraid that they might face the same conditions they faced in 2018 where lives were lost due to heavy rains that resulted in roads being flooded.

Residents of Lindelani are fed up with blockages in the storm water drainage system which they say have been ongoing for over a year.
They said appeals to the Technical Services Department at Endumeni for assistance ‘have been constantly ignored’.
Resident, Thembinkosi Mhlungu, said ‘with climate change and the rise of unpredictable weather conditions, we are afraid that we might face the same conditions we faced in 2018 where lives were lost due to heavy rains that resulted in roads being flooded.’
“Even after such tragic events took place ,no remedial action was taken.
“We believe that the municipality needs to deal with this matter immediately as the whole of Dundee is facing the same problem, not just Lindelani. Storm water drains need to be attended to and be cleared to prevent future flooding due to blockages.”

Responding to queries, Rama Govender, Assistant Manager at Technical Services, said ‘the Municipality is aware of this storm water problem which is caused by illegal dumping which blocks the storm water reticulation system. “Currently, the storm water design of the pipe diameter does not have sufficient capacity to handle these freak storms.

“Furthermore, we are currently requesting the storm water master plan to be in place to address this problem. We are also currently busy with unblocking the system and connecting this to a bigger pipeline outfall.” Meantime, residents should refrain from littering as this clogs the town’s drainage system.
