Die Woestynrot wins big at Caxton Awards

The Caxton Awards honours excellence in the newspaper industry at their annual awards evening

Johann Hamman, the Courier’s exuberant freelancer can now add ‘award winner’ to his credentials.

Johann was named as the Best Regular Columnist at this year’s Caxton awards, for his piece, Devil’s Advocate.

The Caxton Awards honours excellence in the newspaper industry at their annual awards evening. Johann, who has been writing for the Courier for close to 14 years, won the award for the first time.

Die Woestynrot or Desert Rat has been Johann’s non de plume for many years. “The idea for the column just flows into place, always ably assisted by my manic imagination and the impact of environmental factors on my daily commute with life,” said Johann when asked where he gets the inspiration for his columns from.

The realisation that he’s now a Caxton Award winner hasn’t sunk in yet for Johann, but winning hasn’t gone to his head. He remains his ever boisterous self, eager to highlight social ills in a humourous and informative manner.
