Protesters block off roads with rocks and burning tyres

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to avoid congestion.

The Newcastle Municipality has issued a notice to motorists using the Amcor Dam road towards ArcelorMittal.

It is believed, protesters have blocked off the road with rocks and burning tyres.

According to the notice posted on social media by Head of Communications, Doctor Dumisani Thabethe, this action is carried out by contract workers ‘who want to be absorbed as permanent workers’.

Police and officials from the Fire Department are reportedly at the scene along with Traffic Officials who are aiding to divert traffic.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to avoid congestion.
