20% increase on rates as winter approaches

She warned residents of a possible 20 per cent increase proposed by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), which is said to be beyond the municipality’s control.

When Newcastle cools down, residents’ tempers begin to heat up.

During the winter months, Newcastle Municipality is often the target of angry calls, letters and social media posts, especially after rates rise.

This is an annual headache for Finance Department officials.

“We are planning ahead this time, and want to make people aware that winter is coming, so they must control their consumption of electricity,” said Director of Financial Management, Asha Haripersad.

She warned residents of a possible 20 per cent increase proposed by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), which is said to be beyond the municipality’s control.

This increase is set out by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Treasury.

Coupled with the new General Valuation Roll on properties, and a looming tariff increase with the new Budget, residents are urged to brace themselves and tighten the proverbial belts heading into the colder season.
Otherwise, they may find themselves out of pocket.
