Gavin’s closest shave was for a good cause

'Everyone should try and make a little difference to help someone else out'

Gavin Slater has become adept at fighting battles for the Dundee Diehards re-enactment team – taking on Boers and Zulus and sometimes even Redcoats when he swaps sides.
For the past two years, he has grown his hair in what Gavin says is his contribution in his battle to assist cancer victims.
To mark Shavathon Week, Gavin chose to have his magnificent head of hair shorn.

Mariza Snyman of Cutting Edge shearing Gavin Slater’s magnificent locks after he had left his hair to grow for two years.

“My last haircut was on April 5, 2017, just before my daughter’s wedding. Since then it has just been allowed to grow,” explained Gavin while hairdresser, Mariza Snyman of Cutting Edge, eagerly sharpened her scissors in anticipation of the big cut.
Mariza measured Gavin’s ponytails coming in at around 20cm.
Gavin says the pigtails will be donated to the Cancer Association and, hopefully, a victim who has lost his or her hair due to radiation treatment will be able to use the hair with a wig to assist them to maintain their quality of life.
“She knows me better than anyone else – she always supports me with my ventures – Diehards and whatever I do.
“But I can tell you this – she will be thrilled to see me with a number four haircut!”
