This strike, which was meant to take place on Wednesday, was postponed due to strike action undertaken the day before by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), which Nehawu is affiliated to.

The national Nehawu strike called all members to participate until their demands are met.
Some demands include an introduction of a new salary dispensation for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), payment of outstanding benefits, equal payment as counterparts in the public service, student allowances must be paid on time as well as implement sound human resources policies at the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Deputy Chairperson of Nehawu Mnambithi Branch Ms Nkosi exclaimed: “Until the Minister can negotiate there will be a total shutdown.”

Baring posters, the staff members were supported by the learners that picketed outside the campus gates in Shepstone Avenue.

The strike is still on-going, up until all the demands are met by the Department of Higher Education and Training, we are aware that an urgent meeting is being called for by the Minister to discuss the grievances and more importantly our demands.

“I hope that the meeting will bear fruit. We want to thank the South African Students Congress Organisation (SASCO) for their support,” said Regional Secretary of Nehawu, Nthokozo Nxumalo.
