Men arrested in possession of firearms and ammunition in Weenen

The suspects were found with pistols, homemade firearms and ammunition in their possession

Four men were arrested in the Mtebhula and Sahlumbe areas of Weenen on Sunday (February 17) after they were found to be in possession of unlicensed firearms.

The suspects appeared in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where they were remanded into custody until today (February 22) and March 8.

The arrests were made by Tactical Response Team (TRT) officers from eThekwini Central and Phoenix, as well as Newcastle Public Order Police.

Three of the four men, aged between 32 and 51, were arrested in the Mtebhula area after they were each found with a pistol and a total of seven rounds of ammunition in their possession.

They were charged and detained at Weenen police station.

A 23-year-old male was then arrested in the Sahlumbe area after he was found with two homemade firearms in his possession. A homemade rifle and a homemade pistol were confiscated. He was also charged for possession of unlicensed firearms.

These operations will continue throughout the Weenen policing precinct and surrounding areas. All the recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were involved in any crimes in the republic.
