UPDATE (VIDEO): Church members take to the streets to teach #VryheidViolentProtestors a lesson

After their Sunday morning church service, the congregation of Vryheid NG Moedergemeente took to the streets.

Members of Vryheid’s NG Moedergemeente (Klipkerk) marched along Church Street (the main street running through the town) this morning.

Instead of placards, knobkerries or hockey sticks, members of the church congregation were armed with plastic rubbish bags, which they quickly filled up with the rubbish that had been strewn all over the street by angry protestors on Friday morning.

“Our God is much bigger than this chaos,” said Pastor Ferdinand van Niekerk, an activist and respected member of the community. “We can’t let things like what happened on Friday bring us down. We need to rise above the situation.”

A mess was left behind as the angry mob toppled bins and threw rubbish in the streets.

“All the members of our congregation were invited to join and after this morning’s church service, we set to work cleaning up the streets.”

Mr Van Niekerk added that this initiative formed part of the iCityzn’s movement toward promoting a sense of responsibility, compassion, collaboration and commitment toward positive change in all the citizens of Vryheid.

Residents of Vryheid are invited to join iCityzn at its Vryheid Partners for Growth breakfast this Friday, where discussions will take place on how to ensure that Vryheid is a safe, economically stable and caring community for all who live in it.
