Community watch groups douse Stilwater flames

Friday night's fire at the old Stilwater Motel was quickly contained by members of Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch, Afriforum, the fire department and community members who assisted by providing water to douse the flames.

Members of local community neighbourhood watch groups responded without hesitation to the call for assistance when a fire broke out in a storeroom at the old Stilwater Motel late on Friday night.
“When we got there it was pretty bad,” explains one of the patrollers from Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch, who was one of the first to arrive at the scene.

“It had spread through to the rooms at the back of the workshop as well, but we were able to control it pretty quickly. The roller door was so red from the fire that it almost looked like lava…”

It is believed that the fire started between 11pm and 11:40pm.
