4-metre Southern African Python found near Ladysmith

The snake was found in a chicken coop at Mr Mgaga's home near Mtungwa Primary School

A Southern African Python was removed from the Umhlumayo area near Ladysmith on Thursday (February 14).

Speaking to local snake expert Fanie Cilliers and his daughter, who went out to catch the massive snake, he says they had what seemed like an endless walk of over two kilometres to where the massive snake was. They could not drive there due to thick mud.

The snake was found at Mr Mgaga’s home near Mtungwa Primary School. It had been there for the past three days.

Due to the ongoing protest action in the area, residents could not contact Fanie sooner.

“It was luck that the snake did not move from the area,” says the snake expert.

The python was in a chicken coop behind some old doors and Fanie removed it with ease. “I started the great hike  again, this time with a 12kg python on my back. I slipped and slid all the way back to my vehicle,” he chuckles.

When Fanie reached his vehicle to drive back to Ladysmith, they encountered more protest action and the trip ended up being a lot longer than expected. They finally got home after a three-hour drive.

The python was measured at a whopping four metres in length.
