Remembering Vryheid Public Safety Officer, Jan Markwat

Jan Markwat passed away at Newcastle Mediclinic as a result of complications from a bleeding ulcer, leaving behind his loving wife, Elmarie, and young son, Darius.

“DEATH comes to all,” wrote 19th century poet and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, “but great achievements build a monument which shall endure until the sun grows cold…”

To those who knew AbaQulusi Municipality Public Safety Officer, Jan Markwat, these words may bring some comfort as they mourn his recent passing and remember, with great fondness, the type of man he was.
Jan Markwat was a humble man and, it is in that humility and compassion for others that he achieved a greatness that will endure in the memories of all whose lives he touched.

Friend and colleague at AbaQulusi Municipality’s Department of Public Safety, Kumarin Naicker, describes Jan as a “professional and a good human being” and is deeply saddened by his untimely passing.

“He started working with me in 1997,” he states. “As a friend and colleague, I am tremendously saddened by his passing. My sincere condolences go out to his family,” he adds mournfully. “For the many years we have worked together, he was an honest, respectful, loyal and hardworking soul who kept abreast of all the fundamentals of his profession. He was a professional and a good human being, Rest in peace, Mr Markwat.”

Head of Public Safety, TS Mthembu, had the following to say, “Mr Jan Markwat was loyal, dedicated and upheld the image of the traffic officer’s profession. His experience and the knowledge he showed towards his job was amazing and I regarded him as one of the finest traffic officers I’ve ever known. He was a good ambassador because he respected everyone he encountered, yet remained firm in dealing with motorists disobeying the rules of the road. He will be sorely missed for his exemplary contribution since 1997 when he joined AbaQulusi Municipality. Condolences to his family and colleagues. May his good soul rest in peace…”

Dirk Marais, in his message to the family on social media writes, “Jan was ‘n persoon wat jy nie kan beskryf nie – net goed! Best of the best! God kom haal Sy diensknegte vroeg!”

On January 25, Jan Markwat passed away at Newcastle Mediclinic as a result of complications from a bleeding ulcer, leaving behind his loving wife, Elmarie, and young son, Darius.

“He loved his family with all his heart,” affirms grieving widow, Elmarie Markwat. “He would have done anything for us. He also loved his work. And if there were anyone needing help, he would have been there. He was also trustworthy and loyal…”

“We love and miss him,” she concludes. “Thank you to everyone for their support during this difficult time.”
