Mthashana’s gates closed to students and staff due to national strike

Mthashana FET College was shut down by union representatives as part of NEHAWU's national strike.

NEHAWU (National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union) members stood in protest outside Mthashana FET College this morning as part of the union’s national mass TVET and CET strike.
The gates of the Vryheid, Ulundi and Nongoma campuses were barred today as employees protested outside the colleges.

Members are demanding that the Department’s director general, Gwebinkundla Fellix Qonde, step down. They also want to be given permanent teaching posts.
Union members reported for duty this morning but did not enter the classes.

Representatives of NEWAWU as well as Mthashana College were approached for comment but are unwilling to speak to the press at this stage.

This is a developing story and more details will follow when they become available.
