AfriForum tackles smouldering landfill in Paulpietersburg

“Paulpietersburg’s landfill site is one of the poorest sites in Northern KwaZulu-Natal and shows no improvement."

THE civil rights organisation, AfriForum, has demanded an urgent meeting with the eDumbe Local Municipality after numerous complaints were directed to the municipality regarding a smouldering landfill site in Paulpietersburg which is leaving a cloud of smoke over the town at night.

“AfriForum attended a meeting in November 2017 to discuss funds that were allocated for a new landfill site in Paulpietersburg. However, this project has been dragging on for such a long time that the national Department of Environmental Affairs needed to get involved,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.

“Paulpietersburg’s landfill site is one of the poorest sites in Northern KwaZulu-Natal and shows no improvement to be registered according to the law – this after approximately R18 million was granted for the new site. AfriForum will continue to place pressure on the municipality to tackle this problem,” adds Van Aswegen.
