Crime on the increase in Newcastle’s CBD

A business owner in the bustling Kirkland Street has had enough with the social ills which plague the area.

Among alleged drug and alcohol abuse, the owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, says this behaviour has resulted in criminal activities.

“We have had numerous incidents, where these criminals shoplift and even vandalise our store.”

Fed up with the continuous harassment, the owner sought relief by bringing the situation to the attention of the
Newspaper Advertiser.

“I don’t think the issue will be resolved, but I need to make other residents and business owners aware of what goes on in the CBD.”

The owner says this behaviour negatively affects not only his, but other businesses in the area.

“Shoppers are afraid to walk here, because they fear for their safety.” Newcastle SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube confirms that regular patrols are conducted in this specific area.

“A team has been deployed as many criminal cases have been reported there.”

Cpt Ncube also emphasised the cases of robbery and theft which occurred there.

“We will continue to patrol the area and encourage the public to be vigilant at all times and not to carry valuables such as cellphones in their hands from where they can be easily snatched,” he concluded.
