Newspapers reflect the needs of the reader

The Newcastle Advertiser's editor's note.

James Ellis once said that newspapers are the world’s mirrors.

Likewise, a community newspaper should accurately reflect the issues, triumphs and tribulations of the community it is tasked to serve.

Constructive feedback is essential in any business. We rely on feedback, tips and suggestions from the community to improve our product and ensure we have articles you want to read.

Whether it’s illegal dumping, issues with service delivery or even a community member who is doing great things, we need you to be our eyes and ears on the ground.

Last week’s front page article was a talking point both in our office and within the community. The horror and
tragedy of a mother assaulting her child had many reeling in shock. It was devastating to research and write
and even harder to read.

Investigating this story, journalists had to watch the graphic videos in order to give you, the reader, an accurate description of the circumstances surrounding the abuse.

Journalist Tersia Gopi said she was left traumatised by what she saw. “I wish I could just forget it.”

It is through uncovering topics like these however, that allow us to give a voice to the voiceless.

We received such great feedback from community members after last week’s edition, and have really taken
suggestions on board with a view to growing and diversifying our content.

Thank you to loyal reader, Mohamed Seedat for taking the time to pick up the phone and give us productive,
thoughtful feedback on some of the articles we carried. We definitely want to hear more!

As a reader, it is your job to let us know if we’re not doing it right. My inbox is open on reveshni@caxton.co.za.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
