The Newcastle Advertiser had the opportunity to interview this self-evident teenage genius.

Panorama Combined School’s top learner for 2018, Boitumelo Mhdaweni achieved seven As with an average of 86.5 per cent in his final matric examination.

Were you always academically inclined?

“I would like think I was throughout my school career, although I was not a top learner all the time, my efforts were recognised and I did my best.

Which subjects do you believe are your strongest?

Definitely mathematics, science and English.

Were you able to learn better in a group or was it easier to study on your own?

I studied better on my own and revised with my friends at our study group sessions.

How important are past year papers when preparing for the final exam?

Past questions papers aided me a lot as they helped me gauge the type of questions set out in the exam, especially mathematics.

What kind of support system did you have to help you cope with the pressures of your final year in school?

My parents, Thaba and Anna, as well as my teachers and principal were my biggest support. The Camp Talent
Development Programme held at the school also helped with university applications.

How did you balance studying and having a social life at the same time?

When I wasn’t revising school work with my friends, I enjoyed playing basketball, reading and playing video games.

What do you plan on studying and which university will you be attending?

I will be pursuing a career in medicine at the University of Cape Town, I’ve just received my acceptance letter.

What are you most looking forward to once you arrive at university?

I’m looking forward to making an easy transition from school to university. I’ve heard many say it is difficult, but I wish to maintain a high standard of study.

What are your goals once you qualify as a medical practitioner?

I want to give back to the community of Newcastle. Once I qualify I would like to work at one of the hospitals. My ultimate dream is to one day own a hospital of my own.

What is your advice to Grade 12s of 2019?

Work as early as possible. Give up your sleep if you have too. Put in hardwork and listen to your teachers they know more and can help you. You also need to pray often as possible, I’m strong in my faith and believe the grace of God played a role in my academic achievements.
