Ox wagon ‘re-enactment’ highlights 180th Blood River battle commemoration

Thousands of people from around the country and abroad packed into the Blood River site

An authentic ox wagon, complete with men, women children and ‘agter-ryers’, clad in traditional Boer dress, highlighted Sunday’s 180th commemoration of the iconic battle of Blood River – about 42km from Dundee.

Thousands of people from around the country and even Australia gathered for the event which included Boeresport, a church service and an outline of the battle and aftermath by Dr Louis Bothma – a renowned lecturer and author.

The ox wagon and traditional Voortrekker camp were set up by the Trek Boer Vereeniging of South Africa – a cultural organisation specialising in re-enacting historical events.
