Bowlers brave heat for the meat

The continued hot spell did not deter many members who braved the heat to take part in the monthly FedAuto meat competition.

The final evening of the ever-popular FedAuto Business League was held last Thursday evening between teams from the two sections, played in order of their finish after seven rounds of play.

The final between the top two teams, Hackers and Darrel Brown’s Girls was a close affair until the closing stages, where Hackers scored a five to put them into an unassailable lead.

Golfers Lionel Phillips and James Mott set up an excellent platform for their bowling team members, Lukas Niemand and Tara Hartman, to deservedly record the win for Hackers.

In the playoff between the teams which came second in each section, Putt Putts beat Farmyard with the third finishers won by Bi Agri Smart, which beat Bowldilocks. Eschem edged out Melo’s in the game between the teams which finished fourth.

In the playoff between the teams of FedMazda and FedAuto, the former won the bragging rights! Dealer Principal of FedAuto, Phillip Hawkins thanked Newcastle Bowling Club for hosting the event and Monty Steele and his team for running the tournament so successfully.

Vice-President Lukas Niemand in turn thanked Phillip for the generous sponsorship and continued support of this sought-after event.

Melanie Greaves, Lizette van den Berg and Japie Muller socialise.

The Summer League will be held during January and February of 2019 and teams are reminded to enter as soon as possible.

The continued hot spell did not deter many members who braved the heat to take part in the monthly FedAuto meat competition. Scoring the maximum of 10 points saw the first prize go to Lou Roux, Gordon Dowsett, Gert Roos and Solly Cronje, with the second prize going to Fritz Botha, Colin Brodrick, Mike Hartman and Lynne Dowsett on nine points.

This Saturday sees the annual youngversus-old competition taking place.

Entries close on Friday evening and Burnt End’s money is on the oldies winning the trophy!

Members were saddened to hear the news of the sudden death of former member Jackie Kotze, who will be remembered for his playful antics on and off the green.

The club extends its sincere condolences to Babs and family.

The KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls district community was also shocked to hear that Liefie Oosthuizen, a district bowler from Klipbank Bowling Club (formerly from Harrismith Bowling Club) had suffered a severe stroke last Wednesday evening and passed away on Friday morning.

‘A colourful character who will be sorely missed by all who knew her.’
