Massive drop in fuel price for December

Petrol could likely see a reduction of R1.85 per litre and diesel by an estimated R1.40 per litre

A massive drop in the fuel price is on the cards for December, but this could be tempered by adjustments in the retail and wholesale margin and the possible use of the Slate Levy.

This is according to the Automobile Association (AA), which was commenting on unaudited month-end fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF).

Petrol could likely see a reduction of R1.85 per litre and diesel by an estimated R1.40 per litre.

Illuminating paraffin could come down by R1.28 per litre.

This would see prices returning to where they were during the middle of 2018.

The big decrease is as a result of a combination of substantial retreats in international petroleum prices and a slightly firmer rand, which has trended stronger against the US dollar since its most recent peak in early September.

However, the association said it was possible that not all of these decreases would make it through to the motorist due to various levies.

“There is also the issue of the Slate Levy, which may or may not be retained.”
