Kissing hazardous road conditions goodbye

The Black Top Project is responsible for maintenance of the road surface.

Various contractors have been appointed to the following areas: Estcourt central business district, Frere, Winterton, Drycott, Wembezi, Ntabamhlophe, Loskop and the road heading towards Mooi River.

The rehabilitation entails potholes repaired in affected areas.

“Maybe at a later stage when the budget is better, we can look at resurfacing the roads and not just making repairs to affected parts of the road,” explained Department of Transport Area Office Manager, Robert Ndlela.

He added that the aim of the project is to improve the dangerous road conditions, which will come as a great relief for road users.

The maintenance was set to be complete by December but due to shut down on December 14, those projects will continue in January next year.

“I am pushing to finish before shut down, as roads are getting busier as we near the holiday season,” informed Mr Ndlela.

There was a delay with the Frere contractors along the R103 who were unable to source labour but that matter has since been resolved. Motorists should note that warning signs have been put up 200 to 100 meters away from where contractors are working.

“This gives motorists enough time to slow down while approaching the areas of work, but I doubt there would be any long stops, which will affect travel times,” shared Mr Ndlela.

Both visitors and locals can look forward to improved road conditions by the beginning of the new year.
