UPDATE: A case of culpable homicide opened after woman tragically dies on Allen Street

The truck driver had not been arrested but a case of culpable homicide was opened and the details of the woman’s death was now subject to official inquest.

Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube has responded to media inquiries regarding the woman who died after being run over by a truck on the corner of Allen and Murchison Streets last night (October 2).

According to a source at the scene, paramedics were summoned but the 24-year-old was declared dead at the scene, a fact which was confirmed on Wednesday morning by Newcastle SAPS spokesman, Captain Jabulani Ncube.

Capt. Ncube said the was crushed beneath a truck shortly after 6pm, and according to horrified eyewitnesses, the woman attempted to cross the road at the intersection when she was struck by the vehicle and went beneath its wheels.

The truck driver came to a stop after noticing the impact.

A SAPS forensic team has already begun its preliminary investigations.

Cpt Ncube said the truck driver had not been arrested, but did state a case of culpable homicide was opened and the details of the woman’s death was now subject to official inquest.

The Newcastle Advertiser extended its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
