As a single mother and a hard working nurse, Gwen inspires people everyday, but for her, her most important role is still that of being a mother to her son.

When you’re a nurse, you know that every day you will touch lives, and those lives will touch you. Gwen Williams is one of the nurses who in her passage through life, touches and changes lives wherever she goes.

“My mom is my greatest blessing and my biggest role model. She moulded my siblings and I into the strong people we are today. My sister Linda is also one of the most important people in my life, as she is my pillar of strength.”

Today Gwen, who works as a nursing manager in the Maternity Ward at Mediclinic Newcastle, looks back at her road to success with great pride.

“I became a nurse because I have always wanted to help people and I am extremely proud of what I have achieved as a nurse, but my greatest pleasure will always remain the job itself. It is an absolute privilege to be the first person to witness the miracle of life every day,” she explained.

After completing school, Gwen went on to study nursing and trained at the prestigious Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, but her longing for her hometown led her back to Newcastle. In 1999 however, her nursing career took her beyond South Africa’s borders, to England.

“I lived in England for a few years, but after my son Morgan was born, I felt that I needed to come home because I felt I wanted to serve the Newcastle community.”

Gwen returned to local shores in 2008 and started working at Mediclinic Newcastle and ten years later, is happier than she has ever been.

“I really love my job because I get to know my patients very well. I share my life story with them and they share their lives with me, and that is really fulfilling.”

As a single mother and a hard working nurse, Gwen inspires people everyday, but for her, her most important role is still that of being a mother to her son.

Many consider Gwen an inspiring woman, who leaves her mark on people’s hearts wherever she goes.
