What appeared to be a safe hide-out away from the reach of the law, turned out to be just the opposite for three brazen Malawian criminals, who robbed a retail store in Piet Retief in Mpumalanga last month.

The suspects are believed to have gained access through the store’s roof.

Mornè Potgieter, head of Newcastle CPF and Operations Manager at a local security company said: “They made off with cellphones, clothing, jewellery and shoes. The staff only discovered the store had been burgled the following morning, and immediately informed Piet Retief SAPS of what had happened.”

Not long after the crime was reported, an informant contacted Potgieter and informed him the suspects were in Newcastle, attempting to pawn the cellphones they had stolen, and led him to the Taxi City parking area.
