#WomensMonth: Elizabeth is in the business of care

'My job helps me maintain the lives of the frail and that brings me lots of joy'

53-year-old Elizabeth Mtshali has taken up a different kind of career path when she realised she could not afford to become a nurse. So she took up a very similar career path – as a Caregiver.

It’s exactly what it’s named as, giving care to others. The Estcourt-born woman is employed at Shepstone Place Home for the Aged and has been in the field for 11 years.

Passionate about her work, she explained that it’s not just for anyone.

“It requires patience and a great deal of passion. My job helps me maintain the lives of the frail and that brings me lots of joy,” she said.

She went on to explain that her work not only keeps her occupied and pays her bills but she also gets to show the elderly dignity, love and respect.

Ms Mtshali firmly believes that we all will age one day and will need to be cared for in a clean, safe and happy environment. This is one of the many reasons she values her work. The humble and soft-spoken, mother and grandmother enjoys going to church and cleaning her home. Her favourite meal is phuthu and sugar beans.

Women’s Month message
“I want to tell young girls to ask God to help them not to partake in drugs and alcohol. Make God your first choice and look after yourselves. Take care of your children and teach them respect and good behaviour. Obey God instead of man.”
