Security guard dies as notorious intersection strikes again

The driver was taken by SAPS on suspicion of drunken driving

A driver of a car that is alleged to have gone through a stop street and smashed into a bakkie, killing one passenger, was taken away by the Glencoe SAPS on suspicion of drunken driving.

The accident, on the notorious Glencoe by-pass intersection with the Dundee road, occurred at about 6.45pm on Saturday. A Mercedes Benz travelling from the direction of Ladysmith, on the by-pass road,  crashed into a bakkie transporting Mbube security guards from Glencoe to Dundee.

A guard died on the scene and witnesses said at least nine were injured – some seriously. Alcohol was found in the Mercedes and members of the SAPS took him away to have his blood drawn.

Traffic official and members of the Glencoe Neighbourhood Watch volunteer group were on the scene to assist with traffic control.

Douglas Lees of the Glencoe Neighbourhood Watch Group said the scene was ‘pretty horrific’.

“With all those bumps on the road leading up to the stop street it is amazing that the vehicle failed to stop at the T-junction, resulting in the accident,” he said.
