Durnacol family still seek answers from Department

A letter was sent by the family to Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, KZN Health MEC and attempts were made to contact the Department for comment

Four months after the tragic death of a Durnacol father, his family are still waiting for feedback from the Department of Health.
Alvis Deonath tragically passed away after paramedics at the EMRS base in Durnacol refused to treat him.

Mr Deonath suffered an asthma attack on the evening of April 3. Living a few houses away from the clinic, his family decided to rush him there.

The clinic was already closed at that time, however, security guards who saw that the matter was an emergency, allowed them to proceed to the EMRS base where paramedics were.

The paramedics told the family that they were changing shift and therefore could not help them.

They instead told the family that they should take him to the Dannhauser CHC, approximately 10kms away.
By the time he was rushed to the CHC, Mr Deonath had sadly passed away.

A letter was sent by the family to Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, KZN Health MEC and attempts were made to contact the Department for comment, but to date, none has been received. The Health Department’s spokesperson promised that he would escalate the matter to management and provide feedback, but this too has not happened.

The family was also approached by a lawyer who has promised to take on their case and institute a medical negligence claim.

Mr Deonath, who was the breadwinner of the family, leaves behind his wife and two children, aged ten and two.
