Independent Electoral Commission is on track for 2019 general elections

The IEC presented its readiness for the elections, constitutionally due to be called between May 8 and August 7

The Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality council had a brief presentation by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) during their council meeting held on June 29 at the Wembezi Multipurpose Centre.

IEC officials reported that they are on track to hold the general elections in mid-2019 when the current term of office ends. The IEC presented its readiness for the elections, constitutionally due to be called between May 8 and August 7.

One the current term of office ends, the IEC has a 90-day window thereafter to hold elections, based on a date decided by the President. Until then they do have a few critical milestones and time frames to reach.

The IEC is estimating the first possible Wednesday in May next year, May 8 for elections to take place. The council heard that there are 5.3 million voters within the KwaZulu-Natal region, which has 44 municipalities.

96 440 voters are registered in Inkosi Langalibalele municipal area. Of the 11 districts and 870 wards, we have 23 wards. 60 000 voting officials are appointed to our province to ensure the smooth running of the upcoming elections.
In September this year, new voter registration devices will be delivered. In January 2019, all required equipment and materials will be delivered to municipalities.

In February 2019, the final voter registration weekend is due to take place. Last month was the delimitation phase; phase two will be securing voting stations.

The IEC still has prisoner registration to complete in February 2019. Special voters, mostly elderly persons, will be registered between May 8 and 18 next year. The IEC is currently capturing voter’s details and filing correct information and addresses.
