14-year-old girl catches massive African Rock Python near Ladysmith

For a homeowner in the Estageni area, which is just outside Ezakheni, this was the 4th African Rock Python to be found at his home

Ladysmith and surrounding areas are known to have huge snakes, usually African Rock Pythons.

Furthermore, residents are known to flee in panic at the sight of these monster-sized snakes.

They call local snake expert Fanie Cilliers to capture the fearsome reptiles. Together with the help of his wife and two children, he goes out to safely remove the snakes and relocate them to game reserves in the Ladysmith area.

Fanie was at it again recently, with the help of his daughter Mishké, who is only 14 years old and shows no fear when it comes to snakes or any reptile for that matter.

For a homeowner in the Estageni area, which is just outside Ezakheni, this was the fourth African Rock Python to be found at his home.

Some may say that so many snakes in one place is uncanny, but the Estageni area is the perfect habitat for African Rock Pythons.

The area has lots of water from the nearby Klip River, rocky hills and plenty of livestock which roam around, presenting a perfect food source.

These snakes grow to almost five metres in length!

Fanie and his daughter Mishké responded to the scene and, seeing the snake just basking in the sun, Fanie allowed his daughter to safely capture it herself. He kept a watchful eye on the capture.

According to Mishké, the snake was a “beauty”.

She added that she and her dad measured the African Rock Python, which was a whopping 3.5m.

The homeowner is pleased that the snake has been removed from the area so that his livestock can be safe, as many of his chickens and goats were going missing.

The Estageni snake was safely released at a game reserve near Ladysmith, where there is an abundant food source and where it is away from humans.

Fanie added that he is currently in search of a mammoth python in the St Chad’s area that many people have seen near homes. This snake is known for taking goats as its prey.
