While at the graveyard, the trio were suddenly confronted by a knife-wielding man.

“The man had a big knife and he tried to attack my cousin. He tore his shirt and took a cellphone,” explained Mrs Lepera.

Not satisfied with his loot, the man then followed the terrified visitors to their car, in the hope of securing more valuables. Fortunately for the family, the man had second thoughts and instead fled with the cellphone and knife in hand.

This incident left Mrs Lepera and her relatives petrified.

She warns other locals to be vigilant and aware of any suspicious individuals when visiting departed loved ones at the Keate Street cemetery but is saddened that crime in Estcourt has escalated to such levels.

“We can’t even visit the cemetery where our loved ones have been laid to rest. We were terrified. People must be careful,” concluded Mrs Lepera.
