Rape allegations against an IFP councillor

The story of a local IFP councillor, who is allegedly being investigated for rape, has been doing the rounds.

FROM social media to other newspapers, the story of a local IFP councillor, who is allegedly being investigated for rape, has been doing the rounds.

The story seemed to ripen like a cyst after the ANC Women’s League released a press statement in which they said that they were very disturbed after hearing that the said councillor had allegedly raped a young woman within the AbaQulusi municipality.

“Whilst we take into account the principle of innocent until proven guilty by the law, as the ANCWL we fully support the complainant and call for the law to take its course,” read the letter from the regional secretary, Phumzile Selepe.

According to the letter, the councillor in question promised a young woman (16/17 years) a job and ended up raping her instead.

The complainant is said to have opened a case and the councillor was allegedly apprehended on February 3, this year and was released on bail on the 6th of the same month.

The ANCWL also claims that the councillor in question is not new on the rape scene, as there are other cases against him.

“The ANCWL has serious concerns about the trend of rape cases against community leaders especially from the municipality. We therefore call for our membership and the society in general to support the victims of rape, and those being abused,” read the letter.

The councillor mentioned in the letter was contacted by the Vryheid Herald but could not provide a response by the time of going to print.
