In these cases, the fire fighters are called out to safely remove and later release the snake. However, this was not the case for the family.

They were allegedly informed by the emergency centre operator that the fire truck had run out of diesel and could not assist with removing the reptile. During this time, the python had rerouted and was attempting to gain entry to the family’s home.

“We phoned around and got help from neighbours who risked their lives for our sake. This is a very great concern since lives of the people; especially young children,” said the homeowner.

The snake was removed and later released. Furious with the response from the municipal authorities, the resident asks: “What will the fire staff do if a fire is reported or accidents are reported if they don’t have diesel? Why do they go to work then if they are not going to standby for emergencies?”

The resident’s concerns have been relayed to Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, a response is forthcoming.
