St Martin’s to bear the fruit of Majuba Rotary’s kindness

Rising to the occasion, Majuba Rotary singled out St Martin's Village for the initiative, and planted 35 pecan nut trees at the home for abandoned and abused babies.

St Martin’s Village has firmly set its roots in the community, thanks to Majuba Rotary.

Rotary International President-elect, Ian Riseley, recently discussed the serious threat of environmental degradation and global climate change.

As trees removed carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which slowed down global warming, Riseley challenged all Rotary Clubs to plant a tree.

Rising to the occasion, Majuba Rotary singled out St Martin’s Village for the initiative, and planted 35 pecan nut trees at the home for abandoned and abused babies.

“Majuba Rotary decided to plant one tree for each of its members. We chose St Martin’s Village, as we wanted to make a positive contribution to the earth and help the home become self-sufficient,” said Majuba Rotary Chairperson, Andrè Wagner.

Wagner said St Martin’s Village would be able to harvest the trees in six years, and use the fruits to generate an income. This would then be used for the running of the home, ensuring the babies there were being cared for.

Lutz Böhmer, a member of St Martin’s Village Committee, extended his gratitude on behalf of the home.

“We must thank Majuba Rotary for the generous donation. Harvesting the pecan nuts and selling them will contribute immensely to the financial sustainability of St Martin’s Village,” he said.

Anyone wishing to assist St Martin’s Village can contact the home on 087 170 0949.
