MOTORISTS who use the R303 to Lüneburg will agree that the road is a deathtrap laying in wait to claim its next victim.
Dumbe DA councillor, Ron Gevers, reports that even though the road is used frequently to transport children to school, livestock to the market, passengers by taxi and timber and maize to its respective destinations, the Department of Transport has done nothing to ensure the safety of road users.
Most of the bridges along the road no longer have safety rails or crash barriers, road signs such as chevrons are absent, and there is nothing to warn motorists or even pedestrians of the danger they face.
“One of the bridges even has a hole in it that is large enough to seriously injure an unsuspecting pedestrian or an animal, and it could cause significant damage to a vehicle,” warned Mr Gevers. “It is evident that the Department of Transport does not have systems in place to monitor the safety of this road.”

He concluded, “This issue has been reported to the Department of Transport on numerous occasions and nothing has been done. The DA is now appealing, once again, to the Department of Transport to put an action plan together to ensure that this road is safe for all road users. Don’t wait until it is too late.”
In the meantime, motorists are urged to seek alternate routes or exercise extreme caution if using the R303.
