Gandhi sentenced to 60 pounds or 90 days in jail when he appeared in Dundee Court

This court drama relived MK Gandhi appeared in the Dundee Court and the opening of new Gandhi Museum

M.K. Gandhi was sentenced today in the Dundee Court on three courts for illegally taking Indians into the Transvaal from Natal.  Mr Gandhi was appearing in the Dundee Court in front of Magistrate Cross.

He was fined 60 pounds or 90 days in jail.  But he opted to go to jail to further his passive resistance campaign against discrimination against Indians…

Played by Byron Pillay, of the Courier and Pat Rundgren, an historian and tour guide, the playing acting in the old Dundee Court vividly brought to life today that day in November 1913 when Gandhi appeared in front of Mr Cross.

(Apologies for the less than excellent quality)

The re-enactment marked the opening of the Gandhi Museum in the old Court house on Gladstone Street, to mark Heritage Day.  So real is the old Courthouse that there are even separate seats for white and ‘non white’ members of the public and the accused.

The day also included an Heritage Trail in central Dundee which attracted local and visiting tourists.
