Two suspects wounded in shootout at Theku Plaza

It is alleged the suspects sustained the injuries after opening fire at security guards at the mall, who then returned fire.

Madadeni police responded to an alleged robbery which took place at Theku Plaza, oSizweni on August 30.

Upon arrival officials found two suspects on the ground with fatal head injuries.

It is alleged the suspects sustained the injuries after opening fire at security guards at the mall, who then returned fire.

A by-stander was also injured as a result of the shooting.

Initially a case of attempted murder was opened but was later changed to murder as the victim succumbed to his injury.

Two firearms were recovered from the scene which were allegedly used by the suspects.

“At a later stage police officers received information that one of the suspects stole a guard’s firearm and that an unknown male was seen concealing the weapon at a construction building near the shopping centre.”

He was apprehended and charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspects were rushed to hospital where one died due to the injury, the other suspect is still in a critical condition.

Investigations continue.
