Estcourt Hospice bids farewell to staff

Long-serving member and former Chairman Sheila Kent and Social Worker Tracy Mutsipa were given a fond farewell

It was a sad day at Estcourt Hospice Association on Wednesday. Members gathered to say farewell to two staff members at Hospice House in Beechwood Road.

Long-serving member and former Chairman Sheila Kent and Social Worker Tracy Mutsipa were given a fond farewell. Past and present members gave speeches, speaking about the women’s commitment and loyalty to Estcourt Hospice Association. Mrs Kent joined Hospice in 1992 and was one of the first members to attend the first Hospice Short Course.

Shortly thereafter she was elected onto the board as Chairman, a position she held for 20 years. Choking back tears, Mrs Kent listened to her colleagues tell of the inspiration she has been to them and the beacon of hope she has been to hospice.

“It takes a person of vision and one who is not afraid of problems to head up Hospice,” said former Hospice Manager Reverend Warren Oxford.

Board member Tony Venton spoke of Mrs Kent’s tenacity, especially during the trying time in 2014 when hospice underwent restructuring.

“Sheila took a lot of strain but came through with flying colours, she showed us her mettle. Thank you for being a guiding light,” he said.

Anil Sookraj said that Mrs Kent inspired with her own quiet way. “You always got things done and showed empathy, love, kindness, knowledge and dignity,” Mr Sookraj commented.

Estcourt Hospice Association Clinical Manager Rena Licen described Mrs Kent as a ‘great support.’ Mrs Kent described her journey at hospice as ‘wonderful’ and said it was a privilege to watch the organisation grow.

“I have every confidence that with the current board members and particularly Sister Rena Licen at the helm, Estcourt Hospice will be available to the community it has served for many more years to come,” she said.

Tracy Mutsipa who joined Estcourt Hospice Association in 2011 as the first full-time Social Worker was thanked for her kindness and knowledge. Mrs Mutsipa not only dealt with social work but soon became involved in training.
