Project Nehemiah team visits Vryheid – Rebuilding a nation

Project Nehemiah, with AfriForum as one of the major sponsors, is an initiative intent on rebuilding traumatised communities and empowering communities to rise up against the underworld of criminals that is constantly lurking and laying in wait for an opportunity to strike.

IN the Bible, the book of Nehemiah describes the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem after restoring the city from ruins.

Symbolically, this may just be an accurate parallel between the city of Jerusalem in ruins and the current state of the nation in our own country.

Instability and violent crime affects us all, and a common instigator behind the all too prevalent flare-ups of violent protests and civil unrest throughout the country is bad service delivery. Farm attacks, hijackings and home invasions are on the rise and it seems as if no one is safe anymore.

General Roland de Vries made a brief pit stop at the newly established AfriForum Community Centre in Vryheid last week after the Project Nehemiah team visited Utrecht for a scheduled meeting with the community.

De Vries emphasised the importance of sharing information, networking and empowering communities in these times of political unrest and uncertainty.

“The government is not protecting its people,” he said, referring to the recent panic and unrest in Coligny as an example. “We are currently at a stage of fourth generation warfare,” he stated solemnly.

Fourth-generation warfare is conflict characterized by a blurring of the lines between war and politics, combatants and civilians.

The driving forces behind this project are:

  • People’s right to life, and their right to live safely and to prosper in peace, as enshrined in the South African Constitution and confirmed by communities at risk.
  • the South African Police Service Act no 68 of 1995, which gives effect to community policing, the creation of community policing forums.
  • the establishment of community safety plans and the common need of all good people in South Africa to live safely and prosperously in peace, free from violent crime.

The aim of Project Nehemiah is to bring about a future scenario where South Africa is characterised as a country where increasing improvement in governance, political stability and economic prosperity exists.

The aim is to create a country where violent crime is brought under control to an acceptable level by effective
policing and justice of law and order. Furthermore, where government succeeds in implementing effective community security plans in urban as well rural environments, and actions are characterised by spontaneous cooperation between the police and the community.

In this preferred scenario, the outcome of Project Nehemiah will instill hope and confidence among all minority groupings in South Africa and ensure that their existence and economic growth are guaranteed and that they can live safely within acceptable limits.
