Nurses recognised on International Nurse’s Day

District Mayor, Doctor Musa Ngubane was the guest speaker of the day and delivered his address to nurse's present.

NEWCASTLE CBD – International Nurse’s Day was celebrated by staff at MediClinic Newcastle at its conference hall on May 12.

District Mayor, Doctor Musa Ngubane was the guest speaker of the day and delivered his address to nurse’s present.

He emphasised the role played of nurse’s and shared his personal experience.

“Coming from a family of seven children. I was the only one to pursue a profession in medicine,” he said.

“In my many titles, I am first a doctor.”

He gained his inspiration from his mother who promoted medicine in the place he called home – Jozini.

“My mother is my role model and people appreciated the service that she provided, and I looked up to her.”

Ngubane said doctors and medical professionals would not have any significance without the help of nurses.

“Yes, the doctors are there to treat patients, but the nurses are the ones who have to take care of them,” he added.

“Nurses play a critical role in the health care industry.”

Nurses are predisposed to dangers and risk their lives.

Ngubane encouraged doctors to build a strong relationship with nurses, for without their contribution doctors would not survive.

“As doctors we need to respect the doctor-nurse relationship.”

He stressed that a day like this was set aside to recognise and inspire nurses to perform well and remain professional.

“We congratulate nurses for persevering. Your efforts are appreciated,” he concluded.

The day also saw the presentation of the nursing excellence awards.

Ronel Greyling, an enrolled nursing auxiliary staff member for over 20 years at Mediclinic Newcastle, received the nursing excellence award for 2017.
