Complainant arrested after reporting false case in Ladysmith

During an interview with the complainant, the investigating officer realised that the version given by the man did not ring true

A 26-year-old man is in hot water after having reported a false case to police in Ladysmith.

On Sunday (May 14), the complainant reported that he had been on duty at the business where he works in Egerton Road when, at around 2.30am, the business was robbed.

According to him, four men armed with firearms entered the premises and demanded the keys to a truck. They then supposedly drove with him in the truck to the Driefontein area, where the truck was involved in a collision and he managed to flee.

During an interview with the complainant, the investigating officer realised that the version given by the man did not ring true.

Further investigation into the incident revealed that the complainant had lied about the incident and had in fact taken the vehicle without permission from the business.

After having been involved in an accident with the truck, he abandoned the vehicle and to cover his misdeeds, he reported a false case to police.

The man was arrested on Monday and he appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court the following day.

The matter was remanded to May 31 and the accused was released on bail. The accused faces charges of defeating the course of justice and using a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
