Today is Freedom Day, so it’s time to celebrate

A culmination of years of struggle, the product of a negotiated settlement, and an extraordinary moment that marked the end of apartheid in this country

Today (April 27) marks the annual celebration of South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994; a significant day in our country’s history.

A culmination of years of struggle, the product of a negotiated settlement, an extraordinary moment that marked the end of apartheid and the move towards a brighter future with the establishment of a new democratic dispensation under the leadership of the ANC.

It is these historical occurrences that hallmark Freedom Day celebrations each year.

Freedom Day therefore serves as a reminder to us that the guarantee of our freedom requires us to remain permanently vigilant against corruption and the erosion of the values of the Freedom Struggle, and to build an active citizenry that will work towards wiping out the legacy of racism, inequality and the promotion of the rights embodied in our constitution.
