Intelligence-driven information led to the arrest of a suspect believed to have been involved in the murder of the Umzimkhulu Municipal Speaker.
An integrated team comprising the Ladysmith Tactical Response Team, K9 Unit, Crime Intelligence and Van Reenen SAPS swooped on a suspect who boarded a taxi to Gauteng.
The taxi was stopped at Van Reenen and the suspect was found in possession of a revolver.
The 37-year-old appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Monday for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

47-year-old Khaya Thobela, the Umzimkhulu Municipality Speaker, was shot at his home on Thursday. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition and passed away in hospital on Sunday morning.
The motive for the attack is still unknown.
A case of murder is being investigated by Ibisi police station.
“We commend the swift arrest by the integrated team. This has ensured that the culprit was apprehended before he fled the province. The recovered firearm will be subjected to ballistic tests to determine if it was used in the murder of the Speaker or any other crime in the country,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
