EASTER HOLIDAY: Four ways to get away from the rat race

If you need a break over the Easter holiday, why not try these ideas?

If you’re planning an Easter getaway, local remains lekker.

Instead of packing up for the crowded beaches or choked urban streets, why not consider these four getaway ideas a bit closer to home?

A ‘long range’ trip

Accommodation around the majestic Drakensberg mountain range is numerous and varying – from sports and leisure to pure relaxation, there are countless resorts, hotels and locals you can truly unwind at. Explore the splendour of the mighty peaks on hiking trails, or dare to scale the heights in a 4×4.

For a short hike, take along:

Route or trail map

GPS or compass

Sunscreen and lip protection

Sunglassses

Bottled water

Energy snacks

Insect repellent

Suitable shoes with socks

Meandering to heal the soul

Whether you’re touring the Meander or taking in the abundance of nature, taking the back routes through the Midlands is a rewarding experience. Stop off at craft shops, indulge in artisanal cuisine or make your own cheese!

Camping or caravanning

Whether it’s at the Balele Resort in Utrecht or the Chelmsford/Ntshingwayo Dam outside Newcastle, there are countless camping and caravan sites in the area. Relax on the water’s edge and get completely into the outdoor experience.

Embracing nature

Although these might seem outdated, bird- and nature-watching were popular for a reason. Take along a camera and a pair of binoculars, and take notes of what wondrous creatures you’ve seen. This is also a great activity for the whole family.
